Key Fob Not Recognized

So, I was going through a drive through today and stopped and turned off the engine for about 5 minutes waiting for the food. When i tried to start the F-Pace it wouldn't start. It said key fob not recognized even though it was in my pocket while I am sitting in the driver's seat. I pulled it out of my pocket and it still did not recognize. Finally I had to open and close the tailgate and then it started. Seems to be starting ok now. Anyone had this happen? Maybe the key fob battery is low? I guess I could use the second key fob.

Yes, I used to have this happen time to time. However, I haven't had it happen at all since the last software update.

When it happened to me, it wasn't like I had to do something odd to get it to start though. I did have to take the key out of my pocket and put it up against the steering column on the left side in the spot noted by the three raised lines to get it to start.

This is the spot you need to use if ever the battery in the fob dies and you have to open the car with the key in the fob.

However, I would make sure you have all of the software updates done. Mine has been fine since they were all completed.

Hey @PA-FPace-F , when did you have your latest *Update* ???

Did you get the *2.5* or *3.0* , or whatever it is up to now ???

Hey @PA-FPace-F , when did you have your latest Update ???What is the latest update?
I have a 2017 FPace which shuts down and will not start at various times.I have changed the key fob batteries and the main car battery and the Alternator. I’m now thinking I have to download and install the latest Software. Anyone know how to do this? I am in the US. Virgin Islands, there is no Dealership here.

Did you get the 2.5 or 3.0 , or whatever it is up to now ???

I have 2.5, and the telematics update. According to my dealership I have the absolute latest software since I reached out to them over the last week after Jag Corporate got back to me on my Incontrol Remote App issues. I'm still having issue starting the car remotely and Jag Corp said there was a later update to fix the issue I was seeing, but when I contacted the Dealership they said they ran my config up against the available software and it said I had the latest. So I've had nothing new installed since early November. I have a feeling that Jag Corporate may have more info on this than my trusty dealerships service writer though!

Did you try putting the key on that spot on the column and it wouldn't start that way as well? If so I would get that checked out. That should work all the time. It's RFID based I believe.

So, I did some further research and I found this link about if your F-Pace does not start properly.

Jaguar Owner Information

It states "Alternatively, if the engine fails to start, the alarm system may need to be reset. To reset the alarm system, lock and unlock the vehicle. See UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE."

So I am thinking maybe I sat there long enough that the alarm set and then it wouldn't start. When I pushed the key fob to open and shut the tailgate the alarm turned off and then I was able to start the F-Pace. I'll have to try it again when I am parked in my garage or somewhere other than the fast food line!

So, I did some experimenting tonight and I am able to duplicate it every time. What I do is start the F-Pace then turn it off. Without doing anything inside but sit in the drivers seat I sit and wait for the system to cycle down(I have ICTP) including any thing that may be running. This takes about 10 minutes. Then I try to start it and it does not recognize the fob. I can then push other buttons, door lock/unlock on armrest, open and shut door, and take the key fob out of my pocket and move it around and it does not start. If I get out of the F-Pace and move away and then get back in it then will start or if I hit a button on the key fob(lock/unlock or open hatch) then it will start. So, I am wondering if some of you could also try it to see if you have the same thing happen. I tried my second key fob and it did the same thing. The manual did reference this as a possible problem that could occur(not recognizing the fob) but this seems like a problem that could be fixed especially since it happens every time.

I think that this is intended behavior. Once the alarm/security system is turned on, the ignition itself and it's key proximity sensor is disabled. There should only be a couple ways to properly turn off the alarm/security system and unlocking via key detection while touching the underside of the handle or an appropriate key button being pressed are two (not sure if there are or even should be any others). The point being that the alarm should be shut off before ignition becomes available. The systems should be kept separate, the alarm should disable ignition and ignition should not be allowed to turn off the alarm.

I haven't seen a schematic, any design docs or anything like this; but it is how the system worked on one of my other cars and it seems logical.

So, I spoke with JLR this morning and not a known issue so maybe it is just my F-Pace. It is strange it so reproducible. Hopefully, someone else has a chance to try it to see if they can duplicate. At least I have a workaround and the situation doesn't really happen too often. I don't really want to take it in just for this problem.

I was unable to recreate your same experience (R-Sport with 3/2016 build date): started car, shut off engine, waited for complete shut down of ICTP (including LED fans and hazard light), but car started right up without any issues. Good luck with getting this addressed.

Baherrick, did you try to put the key on the 3 lines on the left side of the Steering column and see if then it will start without hitting a lock button? I believe that should work since the RFID tag in the key fob will be recognized by the sensor in the column and turn off the alarm and start the car. That is my understanding.

#17 ·
Yes, I read your post yesterday and I tried this experiment several times and I put the key fob up to the three lines three different times and twice it worked but one time it seemed to get all confused and when I put the key fob up to the three lines it would energize like it wanted to start but still would not start.

My biggest question is why does it arm if you never get out of the vehicle? It has a sensor to know your butt is in the driver seat....if you haven't gotten up (ie. The drive-thru situation) why would all the immobilizing the ignition happen? I can understand if you've gotten out of the car, but not if you remain seated the entire time as baherrick stated.

#21 ·
Good question, I don't see why it would arm if it knew the driver was still in the car. My guess is that things like the seat butt sensors are off when the car is off.

baherrick, did you ever get this issue resolved?

My wife and I were seeing shorter lock and unlock ranges from our fobs. I replaced the batteries in both fobs. One works, and the other gives me the unrecognized message.

The key that is not recognized will not unlock, lock or open the rear hatch or start in my pocket, but if I use the other fob to open up the car, and move the known working fob out of range and old the unrecognized fob against the steering column, the car starts fine.

Is there a reprogramming sequence one needs to follow when replacing batteries in a fob?

Help?!

Based on your description it looks like the FOB is not working at all, from this, I suggest the first thing you check is the new battery - perhaps it is not seated correctly - it happened to me, the act of putting things back together jostled things out of position on a fob from a different car - or you got a bad battery. If you haven't already, try swapping the batteries between your two fobs since you know that one works.

your car has two fob!s is this error happening with both ?

Had this happened to me also with my 2019 F-Pace. Change the batterie for the key, didn't change anything. Went to the dealer to have it fix, a 2 hrs drive for me. They did some kind of update on the computer of the car and it got fixed right away. One thing the technician told me, if it happens again, to look at right side the door handle to see if it's really dirty. He said that sometimes, salt or sand can creep up inside it and interfere with the car recognising the key. Just to wash it and it should work after. Was at the dealer all of 1 hour.

Just replaced both of mine with CR2032's after getting the battery low warning. Working fine.
From the 2017 Manual:
When the battery needs replacing, there is a significant decrease in the effective range and the instrument panel displays Smart key battery low.
To replace the battery:
  1. Slide the cover in the direction of the arrows to remove.
  2. Use the emergency key blade to separate the smart key's body.
  3. Fit a new and unused CR2032 type battery, available from a retailer/authorised repairer, with the positive (+) side upward.

The batteries in our dog's collar & remote are CR2032's ! 2-batteries in the collar & the remote !
We are frequently changing them because we use the collar many hours everyday !
FWIW , we purchase the batteries at BJ's Club (like Sam's or Costco) !
They come in a 6-Pack , which only cost about $7.99 ,
and every once in awhile we'll take advantage of a $2-OFF coupon !:geek:

I’m literally stranded in a dark and freezing parking lot at night, a woman alone, and can’t drive my new f-pace home b/c of this stupid issue. It’s not the first time but last time it randomly started after trying got 10 mins. Just don’t buy this vehicle, I’ve had so many issues. I’ve sat here watching YT vids about it, read through forums, everyone has this issue! But every potential solution I’ve tried hasn’t worked. So now I’m going to have to just leave this expensive car in a public lot overnight and who even knows if it’ll work when I come back k to try again tomorrow. I feel so stupid for buying this vehicle.

Sorry for your predicament.
For me, I think it's a good idea to proactively change the key fob batteries on a regular basis.
I change both fobs every 2 years before I get the low battery message.
After 7 years of ownership, I have learned to always have a battery tender on the car.
Still have the original battery and it seems to be healthy, but I'm going to change it shortly before I have problems.
When batteries are not up to speed in the F-Pace, weird stuff starts to happen.

Same here, mine sits in the FL heat all the time and its 6 years old. Want to be proactive. Thats why I want that scanner tool to aid in reprogramming the battery management system, now that I understand it appears to be a necessary thing.

Hello all,
New to the forum and new to the F-Pace. I just bought the car today and the battery in the car was low from setting 2 months.

I only Have one key fob. I had the hatch open while charging the battery for several hours. When done, I closed The hatch and the key fob would not work.

Not familiar with anything in the car. Can someone direct me in the right direction to reset this?

Thanks,
Tim

Helpful to include year and model of vehicle when asking questions.
Did you get the vehicle open with/without the fob?
Is the vehicles battery now charged?
Did you change battery in fob?
If you have managed to get into the vehicle and it has a charged battery hold fob near steering column to get recognition.
If that fails try replacing fob battery (CR2032).
if that fails get vehicle battery replaced.
