Diesel owners Have you ever seen this warning?

I have about 4200 miles on mine and for the 1st time tonight I get this warning.... Notice it say "No engine restarts in 213 miles. Incorrect diesel exhaust fluid QUALITY detected.

Quality?? this is the factory fill.... SO.... I went to the miles to empty and lo and behold it says as below 213 miles to empty.... Really??
there was no 1500 mile, 1K mile or any other warnings to this point. I have looked at other pictures in other members posts and I see where is says low def and how many miles to empty etc.. but nothing about DEF quality?? Does this make any sense?

I added 2.5 gal and the light is still there, do you need to drive it a few miles before any added DEF registers in the system/display?

What makes me semi nervous is that there was no previous warning and it say QUALITY not QUANTITY... Could the error mean the same thing on a 2018? Should it clear itself after adding some??

Just a thought ,
since you are in NORTHERN Indiana , do you think because of the COLD TEMPS , the *QUALITY* of the DEF could be affected ???
Meaning , if it is Gelling Up slightly ???

I guess if you are parking it in a Garage every night , then this probably wouldn't be the case !

Still doesn't answer the question of WHY you didn't get any other Pre-Warnings !

Heat is DEF's enemy not cold... It sits in a heated garage every night so I don't think cold is affecting it really. Low DEF warning is one thing, but the DEF quality thing has me stymied, especially since its the same DEF that has worked for the 1st 4200 miles. My wife will drive it about 10 miles in the morn. If it doesn't register the 2.5 Gal I put in and keeps counting down, then Houston, we have a problem....

Never a dull moment , with you *DIESEL* Boys & Girls !!!>:)

Keep us posted !!!:)

I had this problem last month and the dealer told me it was a faulty sensor. They had my car for two days (for the fourth time in a year) for this fix as a couple of other minor ones. I really love this car...when it works. No one seems to have any real explanation for the is QUALITY message. I used the Prestone DEF fluid and it was identical in composition to the Jaguar specs.

Yes, I put in 2.5 of Wal Mart DEF. ( Which is ISO certified and absolutely the same as any other DEF on the market.) and it didn't seem to register or raise the miles to empty meter. That is what's making me think there is more to it than a "low DEF level" I'd guess it's a sensor also and I see a trip back to the dealer in it's future.....:(

I would definitely take it in. I'm on my second refill warning and it is displaying normally......first warning at 1500 miles to empty(white) and just this morning it went to less than 1000 miles (yellow) warning. The first time I refilled it the sensors recognized it immediately upon start.

I am... they are coming to get it Monday morning... I'd be happy to have it back before Friday and for Christmas !

It was only down 2.5 gal of DEF so nowhere near empty even though it shows 213 to empty. The one thing I DO believe though is 213 miles till no start !! :D

I got exactly the same warning for like 10 miles two days ago. It disappeared after I refueled - I was heading to the filling station when I got the this warning message. It has not come back since.

Another thing what I knew was that I was getting low on DEF as well - as a matter of fact I got a warning about DEF level this morning and added 2.5 gallons shortly after.

Also outside temps were around 10F in the morning when I got the warning message. Since warning message with mileage countdown disappeared I thought somehow all three factors were correlated

Just added my second 2.5 gallon Autozone DEF at 10,000 miles last weekend. Haven't seen that message yet. Wondering if it is unique to the ICTP vs. ICT, as I didn't get that package. Mine just said 1500 miles to empty and I added a jug.

That's the way to do it when things are working normally..... Unfortunately, thing are NOT working normally here....

My daughter with a 5 yr old Nissan Rogue that had had nary a problem and never been back to the dealer, asked me why our brand new car has problems again? :(

I tried to explain to her how complex these cars are..... But when you have problems with things that should be tested, well thought out, and relatively bulletproof, you have to bite your lip a little bit....:|

I checked my records and received 'Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid quality detected' close to 700 miles ago, giving me warning that car won't start after 249 miles. Even warning message went away after refueling I was wondering if there is a chance that car will just shut down after 249 miles. Clearly it was not the case. I am marking it down as oddball non-reoccurring glitch impacted by following factors
- it was in single digits in the morning when I got the message;
- def levels were low (I got def level low message literally next morning - I expected that);
- fuel tank as at 10% .

I'll let you know what my dealer says.. but mine was counting down to zero and my dealer say if it hit zero and we knew about it, we'd be liable for charges since we didn't heed the warning. Also it is in the 40's, tank was 3/4 full and evidently the DEF tank really was appx 1/2 full.

Something is goofy with the DEF sensor both quality and quantity. I'm not sure if this throws a code ,but the CEL was on.....

@NewToCats
It had a plethora of codes stored including incorrect dosing, level, and incorrect DEF composition. None of which were true. No hardware was replaced but software updates were applied. DEF is full and reads 5217 miles to empty and for the moment we are back in gear....

I also asked to have the latest ICTP update added, and basically was told we currently aren't doing any updates to that until we know they are dependable... SO we will stick with 2.5 a while longer. At least it mostly works....

Hello,

I have had the same message on my F Pace, now for the 5th time. Besides all kind of other fixes in the Shop my car spend almost 5 weeks in 2018 in the Shop.
I have it in as we speak. Last time Jaguar replaced a lot of parts, but sure enough after 1500 miles the message with the wrong quality of DEF fluid came back.

Now Is the Jaguar UK Team involved to fix that problem.

FWIW, I had the same message in my F-Pace 20d a couple months ago - and this happened literally the day after the car had been at the dealer for a week. It took that long for them to figure out why check engine light was on. To add insult to injury, my friends and I were 1.5 hours into a 5 hour long road-trip when we received that scary "shut down in 213 miles" message. The car was entirely full (including a roof top cargo box). We had no recourse except to go 45 minutes out of our way to take the car to the nearest JAG dealer, leave it there, rent a huge SUV from a commercial rental car at the nearby airport because that particular JAG dealer didn't have a loaner. I've yet to hear back from Jaguar customer service if they're going to reimburse me for the cost of the rental - which was significant. So much for "roadside assistance". Sigh.

This happened to me over the holidays. yay. we were about 1/2hr into our trip, loaded down with presents, kids, et al when the message appeared.

I'm at 28k miles, ICT, and use PEAK fluid. I had replaced the fluid about two months ago. Dealer cleaned the DEF injector which was "crystallized" and this seems to have fixed the error for now.

This happened to me again this morning during my commute. This is a second time this occurred to me and I actually forgot about it until I read this thread. https://www.fpaceforum.com/forum/605089-post12.html
Difference this time in my case is that I am not low on DEF and it's not as frowningly cold outside as it was when I got this message first time around. I have always used Blue DEF from the closest store or gas station I happened to be near by when I get low DEF warning.

I scheduled service appointment for the next Tuesday.

"Module PCM update needed to correct issue"

So basically all they did was hook it up to a computer and update the diesel emissions control software. Well, good to know that it was an easy fix. I just wonder what that would have cost if it were out of warranty? Or is that on the longer powertrain warranty? When the DEF heater went on my diesel VW way back VW claimed it wasn't part of the powertrain.

#33 ·
In California it would be part of the emissions warranty, which is longer than the other warranties on the car.

Nice to know. I've had one diesel DEF related warning while on a long road trip and the possible outcomes were not good. Including needing parts with several week lead times. But it turned out to be a one-time glitch on my car.

Thanks for reporting the solution.

Welp, looks like it's my turn for this warning. Off to the dealer after work today.

It's the same DEF that's been in there for multiple fills, so I'm assuming a faulty sensor or a software upgrade will occur instead.

I have the 2017 F-Pace Deisel and it’s been in the shop three time la for this issue.
DANG !!! You racked-up some MILES on that BAD BOY !!! 54,672-miles(y)(y)

I have a 2017 fpace 20d now with 145,000 km
The first time i received this error code and took it in to the dealer they checked the quality of the def and said it was borderline bad/good
I had the manufacture test the def and it was within tolerance. Jaguar said draining the fluid and putting new fluid in resolved the problem so the sensors in the car are more sensitive and basically it’s my fault for not having good def fluid. Cost me almost $400

now i own a digital refractometer and i test and record every def bottle before i put it in the car

now fast foward 2 weeks ago
144,000 km
Check engine light goes on
P20ee
Need a new catalytic it’s all clogged
Def nozzle is clogged
Bad def notification as well
5000 in repairs
Fluid was tested and was good

2 weeks later
Bad def fluid notification again
Same def fluid in the tank as before. None added

Now i have to book another appointment to take my car in

anyone want to buy a diesel jaguar fpace. ??

I had 63,000 km on the clock when I got the message.
So as a precaution I filled up the diesel additive
I have 5 year warranty so called up the insurer who told me the problem has to be determined by Jaguar dealer.
So no surprise when I had to pay $400 for them to tell me the quality of the additive was the problem.
Only Jaguar had put the additive in prior to the warning.
So really it’s just an erroneous message that requires a reset.
The problem in Australia is dealers are not plentiful and distances between them is greater than the warning that no restarts will be permitted.
