Hello everyone,
I have a 2020 F-Pace SVR with just over 25,000 miles. I just took it into the dealership for an oil change and they say I need new rotors and pads. They say that now the brake light is coming on. Doesn’t this seem like very low mileage to need new rotors? Has anyone else had this experience? How long should they last?
Thanks!

I just went through this at 20k. I have a 2021. The light came on.. I made the appt. I’m thinking no more than 2500. I get to the appt.. they take my car back the advisor comes out and says you need brakes and rotors I’m like huh what no way.. then they say it’s 5900. I couldn’t believe it. Apparently you just can’t change the pads you have to do both. They gave me some reason that I now can remember. I ended up purchasing the parts and had my old tech from BMW, install the parts.

How much did they quote you? Even the rears are worn?

As a matter of policy, most shops quote full brake jobs. Partly due to safety, partly do to complaint comebacks for noise and partly as a profit motive.

It's unlikely you need new rotors. I always check the lip that is worn into the very outside edge of the rotor. If it isn't very deep and the rotor surface isn't scored or glazed I don't change them. I also don't machine rotors. Better off buying new ones if your rotors are toast.

Choice of replacement pad is critical. See if Porterfield R4-S pads are available. Call Livermore Performance (LPI Racing) Livermore Performance - LivermorePerformance.com - LPIRacing.com - LPI Racing - racing parts - race parts - race car parts - lpi
These are universally loved by the F Type guys who learned of them via the Aston guys. Super quiet and won't poop on your wheels.

I believe the standard approach with Jag is to change the rotors whenever you change the pads. I went to Porterfield, pads mentioned above, on my 2021 SVR and I did that at 5k miles and didn't change the rotors at that time. I changed the pads out due to the fact that the Brembo we squeaking terribly. The change over silenced the pads and I had no issue not changing the rotors due to the light duty they had till then. With 20k, I think I'd have someone who is a mechanic look at your rotors and let you know if you need to change them.

The brembos being semi metallic can cause the rotor to wear a bit. That is why you normally resurface rotors which a brake change. I think the rotors on the SVRs can't be resurfaced and that is the problem why they need to be fully replaced. At least that is my understanding.

I just checked with my dealer in Singapore. They said it costs US$1,500 to change just the front pads inclusive labour and fluids. Warranty won't be void and they also don't advise changing rotors unless they measure too thin.
So I guess the dealers in the US are really trying to profit from this.

I have a 2018 F Pace 20d that I bought new as a leftover in 2019. I took it to the dealer to have my yearly state inspection done and they told me I needed front brakes at just over 12000 miles (it’s my wife’s car and she is not hard on brakes). I did a 4 wheel brake job myself with new rotors as the rears were getting close. The car now has just over 33000 miles and still ok. Factory rotors were garbage as the iron was flaking which may be the cause for the premature failure of the pads. All replacement parts that I used were aftermarket from BrakePerformance. I used regular rotor’s & ceramic pads. I usually use cross drilled & vented rotors but didn’t want to go for the extra dollars if I had to replace again in another 12000 miles. I will use the drilled & vented next time as I normally do.

I was told if I only changed the pads and not the rotors it would cause the car to vibrate when braking
The vibration, if it happens at all, is due to piston run out. The further the brake piston moves out of the caliper, the looser things get and so when rotors are turned the pistons have to travel out of the caliper assembly slightly further, but it's a very minute distance. I don't blame jag for throwing rotors at every job as they have nothing to loose, and it's less of a chance someone will come back complaining about who knows what. That being said, if the rotor has a number stamped on it's edge, that number indicates the minimum tolerance that it can be turned to. Jag brakes aren't magic nor are the cars. It's just a car and just a brake system. If the car has some specific rotor protocol, then I'd follow it, and maybe the SVR's do. I have an S and the brakes are likely a Bosch system. It's a normal brake job except for a procedure to deal with the electric packing brakes in the rear.
